How to Denim on Denim

I’ve always been a fan of the denim on denim trend. Also known as the Canadian tuxedo, if done right, it automatically makes you look chic and polished. It makes you look like you tried, but not too hard. It’s also a look that can easily turn into a fashion don’t and you may end up looking like you belong in the Wild West or off to a costume party. The steps to achieving the look can be complicated, confusing and very tricky. Trust me, I have attempted and failed this trend enough to know it’s not easy to pull off. Here are my personal foolproof tips to mastering denim on denim.

  1. The number one rule to live by: light denim on top (lighter denim draws attention) and darker denim on the bottom (dark denim slims the body). This compliments all shapes and sizes.

  2. The more contrast between the denim wash on top and bottom, the better. Looking too matchy-matchy can look like a costume.

  3. Pair denim with basic, classic pieces: white t-shirt, black tank top, etc.

  4. Find a Silhouette you like, whether it’s slim chambray top with wide leg jeans or my personal fave: an oversize denim jacket with slim bootcut pants.

  5. The star of the outfit is the denim, but don’t be afraid to throw in a pop of color or pattern, Whether that’s with your undershirt or with your shoes.

  6. If color or pattern seem overpowering, then stick to an all neutral palette.
