Closet Tour: Organization tips

If you have ever watched the movie "Clueless" then you will understand my closet obsession. When the movie came out on VHS I religiously watched it everyday for a full summer. Cher Horowitz was life goals with her white Jeep Wrangler, amazing wardrobe and her EPIC closet.

There is nothing like a clean, organized space, especially when an area like a closet can get overwhelming. Being the shopaholic that I am, my storage space in my bedroom is limited. I was finally able to take the bigger walk in closet next to my room and set up a personalized closet system. I consulted with both California Closets and The Container Store, which do gorgeous custom designs, but are both very pricey. The designer's time, materials, any luxury detailing (marble counter tops, brass hardware, etc.) would cost $5,000 and up depending on the area you're working with.

Ikea was the next best bet. I had seen their Pax wardrobe system all over pinterest and youtube. As an HGTV fanatic, designing the overall look was the best part and so much fun. They have a computers readily available where you build your closet from scratch, outlining the layout while giving you the cost break down instantly. It took me 2 weeks to settle on my design and make sure I was satisfied with the aesthetics and functionality. Once I was content,  I was able to schedule delivery and set up as early as the following week. With materials, delivery and assembly it came out to $1,300.

Tips on how to stay neat and organized:

Empty everything out: This really helps narrow down what to keep and gives a clear visual on the area you're working with. Always start with a blank canvas.

De-clutter: I myself can struggle with this tip. I have given away brand new things with the tag still attached, in the moment it broke my heart to let it go, but a good rule to go by is if you haven't touched it in a year, the chances of you actually missing it are slim. For sentimental items I do keep a limited space for those items, otherwise everything becomes sentimental and you won't have the nerve to part with anything. That goes for presents you feel obligated to keep. If you still haven't worn or used that present you received from 4 birthdays ago, donate it to goodwill. When you give away something you don't use, you are making room for the things you will. I make a habit to purge at least once a year.

Color code:  Color coordinating shoes and clothes make a world of difference. It keeps your wardrobe cohesive, and polished. I even get a little OCD and organize by style (tank tops, sweaters, long sleeves) This showcases what you have so the next time you go shopping, you'll have a better visual on colors and styles you have a ton of.

Use the same hangers: Going the extra mile and using the same hangers refines the space. You wouldn't think hangers are a big deal, but if you have plastic hangers mixed with wire hangers and wooden hangers, it just looks a cluttered mess. I personally have had my black velvet hangers for about 10 years and they're still in great shape. Nowadays you can get a bundle for super affordable packs of hangers at Ross or Tj Maxx.

Invest in organizing accessories: A trip to container store is my happy place. It's exciting to find new ways to organize and display things. I personally love getting various trays to store inside drawers, that helps to arrange and create a home for anything miscellaneous.

My most prized possessions: Gucci vintage web medium boston bag, chanel cavier leather flap bag with Brass chain, Yves Saint Laurent medium Vicky chain bag.

Storing my accessories, shoes, and purses frees up a ton of space in my room closet. I also hang a collection of fancier tops, skirts and dresses, along with a drawer dedicated to gym gear. It's been well over a year and I'm still absolutely in love with how it turned out. I wanted a boutique ambiance where it feels like I'm shopping my own closet. If you're bawling on a budget and want to live your best organized life, the Ikea Pax system is both aesthetically pleasing and won't break the bank.
